Snorkelling is the easiest way to see underwater Bali: the kit is a mask and fins, and all you need is to be able to swim. The standard half-day tour stops at three points around Nusa Penida — Manta Point, Gamat Bay and Crystal Bay. The water is clear and the coral gardens are shallow.
Manta Point earns its name: in season, mantas with a four-metre wingspan come here to be cleaned and glide a few metres beneath you. It is not guaranteed, but sighting rates are high between May and October.
The Gili Islands are a separate day. These three small islands belong to Lombok and are 1.5–2 hours from Bali by fast boat; the underwater sculpture garden and the green turtles are there. Gili cannot be squeezed into a half day — we plan it as a full day or with one night’s stay.

Small, important notes
Sighting rates at Manta Point are high between May and October, but nothing is guaranteed. If there are none, the boat moves to a second site.
The Gili Islands belong to Lombok and are 1.5–2 hours from Bali by fast boat. They don’t fit a half day; we plan a full day or an overnight.
Your back faces the sun for three hours — wear a rash vest. Use reef-safe sunscreen and never stand on coral.
